How Far in Advance Should You Book a Wedding Photographer? (part 2)

Advice from some of the best wedding photographers in Chicago

We asked some of the best wedding photographers in Chicago how far in advance you should book a wedding photographer:

“Ideally a couple would book their photographer as soon as possible, for some couples this could be over a year and others just a few months. In most cases, the photographer should be the second thing you book after the venue. This allows them to be able to schedule an engagement session early enough to order save the dates. It also allows time for them to develop a relationship with their photographer.”

“I book a year to a year and a half out. Start the process as early as possible, but don’t freak out if you have a short engagement…you never know if your photographer is available so don’t be shy in asking even if your wedding is only a couple months away.”

“Personally, I only book one year in advance. It depends on the type of person you are and how much planning you want to get done right away. If you have someone in mind that you DEFINITELY want, book them as soon as possible. If you have a few options, waiting till a few months before isn’t always a terrible idea either. A lot of photographers will give a significant discount if that date isn’t booked already and the wedding is only a month or two away.”

“That’s a great question and a tough one. If photography is one of your top priorities and your wedding is “in-season” (in Chicago, May-Oct.), 9-15 months is advised. We do have many couples who plan closer to the date, but your first choice may not be available.”

“We book up to 2 years out. DO NOT wait until 6 months before. Chances are, we will be booked. Venues, Photography & Videography are typically the 1st 3 vendors that book.”
