Let’s Rock Your Wedding!
Editor’s Note: for this Best Wedding DJs in Houston Spotlight, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mike, from Skymike Events.
Where have you been featured?
I’ve been a radio personality for 25+ years.
I’m on WeddingWire, a number of Brides Choice/Couples Choice awards, and TheKnot. I do very little advertising because I’m frequently recommended by couples and fellow vendors. Most of my brides saw me somewhere and knew they wanted me.
Why do couples love working with you?
One of my brides said online: “He was much more than just my DJ. He was a friend when we needed one the most.”
I do about a dozen extra things other DJ’s don’t, because the more that goes well in your wedding, the more you’ll love me. I’ve seen so much in 20 years, (including 3 fires!) I have a checklist, and I help my couples solve many problems before they happen. Being a wedding DJ is probably only 20% of what I do.
What do you love most about DJ’ing?
Wow, the answer to that has changed in 20 years, I can tell you. When I was young, it was the whole “rock star” thing, loud music, women, etc. Don’t get me wrong, my early work Rocked also, and customers asked for me. But as I soon learned to be more nuanced, to use finesse, as much as power, … When I moved the spotlight away from me, and on to YOU, I become a multi-dimensional, a much more powerful entertainer. Now, my fav thing is ‘The Hug.’ That hug you get at the end from your Bride, when she says “OMG, this was amazing.”
But I love the whole process, from the first meet-up with the couple, where I learn personal things about them, to all the planning, vendor relations, timeline, even late night worried phone calls – which I love. The exciting Day-Of, and all up to The Hug. I love it more than the check.
How did you get started?
Total accident. Radio guys get fired/ laid off, every couple years, and I was in between on-air gigs, at my cousin’s wedding. My aunt told me, “That guy’s, a DJ, go talk to him.” I said, “No, Tia, he’s a different kind of DJ. I can’t do what he does.” She wouldn’t stop, and I went and talked to him, just to get her to stop bugging me about it. Monday morning I had a new job and then the following Saturday, we discovered I was good at it.
What 3 words best describe your DJ’ing style?
I only need one. Magic. One bride said, (and we’ll edit) “He took a poop storm and turned it into a great night.” I suck at so many other things, but at this job, people will tell you I’m Magic.
What’s your setup like?
I carry two systems to each event, and components for a third. I carry extra everything and things I’ve never even needed, just to ensure no tech glitches. Most of my sound components are top line, ( QSC Amps, Shure Mic). My setup, while powerful, is all basic black, designed to not call attention to itself. Anyone walking into your room will notice your decor, and perhaps the lighting, but not my system.
What budget range do you cater to?
I actually was surprised to find I’m very competitively priced. I prefer elegant, upscale weddings, but people with nearly all budgets can afford me. I’ve had customers say they would have paid me twice my fee. Your DJ will have the biggest effect of anyone involved in your wedding.
What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you play it?
I hate to type myself into one song, because I do every type of wedding, for all ethnicities, income levels, cultural vibes, 7 decades of music, and 20 genres. But if your wedding really rocks, there’s a good chance we’re ending with “Shout,” because it makes your crowd insane. I don’t know how young people know this song, but they will do it, and they will lose their minds.
Mike was incredible. He worked seamlessly with our planner to make sure that everything went off without a hitch. He was so much fun and our guests loved him. My husband and I love that he took the time before the wedding to get to know us– every single song at our wedding fit our personality and was absolutely PERFECT. It didn’t feel like a cookie cutter wedding playlist- it felt unique to our style, and that is because Mike is so thoughtful about his work! We HIGHLY recommend him! One of the best vendor decisions we made!
What can we say? WOW! Mike was awesome! He totally got us and what we wanted for our wedding reception. We did not want the “typical” cheesy wedding DJ and Mike was definitely NOT typical or cheesy. He was all class and was a great MC for the reception. His music selections were perfect and he kept the party going all the way until the end of the night. We were concerned about having the right mix of music that would get guests onto the dance floor, and Mike handled it expertly. Thanks to Mike, our guests had a great time and danced throughout the entire event. Again, WOW!
Skymike is the best. Bottom line. He worked with us beforehand on making sure he understood our wants and needs, and never pressured us into anything we didn’t want. He was always available for questions and constantly checked in with us to make sure we didn’t need anything. At the event, he played to the room and knew exactly how to get people on the dance floor and keep them entertained. He even had some ideas we never would have thought of that made our wedding go more smooth. On top of that, he is flawless on the microphone, which is an absolutely underrated part of a wedding DJ. If you are thinking about using Skymike, stop thinking and book him before someone else does.
